• This fantastic incident took place in this temple during His marriage day.

TEMPLE SPECIALTY

THE TEMPLE ARCHITECTURE AND ITS SURROUNDINGS.....

Shivaloka Thyagesar (Lord Shiva) temple faces East, it has five tier Rajagopuram.  Once we enter the Rajagopuram, we see Nandi Mandapam, followed by hundredleg mandapam.  Sampandhar, accompanied by His wife, Sthoththirapoornambika, situated in separate shrine, gives darshan in 'marriage costume'.

Next comes Shivaloka Thyagaraja sannidhi, this one is facing East along with Goddess Sannidhi.   Devotees are offered only "Vibuthi" as Prasadam, married women believes this Vibuthi gives them Thaali Bhagyam (Mangalya Bhagyam), expiation of previous janma sins, removes disease.

ThirugyAna Sampandhar took birth about 1300 years ago with a mission to revive Vedic culture and re-establish Shaivite worship.  He was born in Seerkazhi, in Chola Kingdom.  He entered into the holy fire of Lord Shiva and merged Himself along with those who were present there to witness His marriage. 
 

        TEMPLE PURANAM

Sampandhar was born to a Brahmin parents named Shivapadha Iruthayar in Seerkazhi about 1300 years ago.  When he was three years old, his father kept him on the banks of tank in Sattainathar Temple, Seerkazhi and went to take bath.  Sampandhar was hungry and started crying "Ammaye, Appa" (Oh Mother, Father).  Goddess Parvathi appeared with Lord Shiva and gave him the celestial breastmilk in a golden bowl.  Sampandhar became ThirugyAna Sampandhar from this day.

After performing many miracles and rekindled the Shaivite worship, he reached 16 years of age.  His father compelled him to marry.  Sampandhar agreed to his father's instructions reluctantly, though he knew that the end was waiting for him.  "It was God's act came through Father's words" - Sampandhar said to himself. The marriage was fixed with Nambiandar Nambee's daughter Poornaswarnambika and the marriage was to take place at the Shivaloka Thyagaraja temple in Achaalpuram.

Thiruneelanakka Naayanaar performed the rituals leading to marriage.  Sampandhar was circum-ambulating Agni and his mind flashed with prayers "post-marriage and human life is always ordeal, Oh My Lord, please take me to your abode".  Moments passed, there was a celestial voice heard followed by a huge column of fire - "Oh Sampandha, you, your wife and all those present here may enter the Fire and reach my abode".  People gathered there hesitated, some were frightened, Goddess Parvathi initiated them to accept Lord's order and distributed the holy ash, thus removing their fear.  (Even now only Vibuthi is given in Her shrine). Showing emotional outbursts on the Lord's Grace, Sampandhar recited "Kathalaaki kasinthu Kanneer malgi......" hymn (this is the last hymn in his life) and entered the holy Fire of Lord Shiva along with others.

ANNUAL TEMPLE FESTIVITIES

Sampandhar's marriage is performed every year Tamil month Vaikasi(May-June), Moola Nakshathra day, in this temple. 
      The entire episode is re-enacted and devotees attend in large number and receivs the Vibuthi Prasadam.
